About the Web Site

This web site began in 1997 as "South America on the Matrix". Over the years new sections were added for Asia (1997), Africa (1998), the Middle East (2001) and North America (2001). Return trips to Africa in 2000 and 2002 and frequent shorter trips throughout North America resulted in many new photos being added to those sections. From March 2004 through May 2006, the author lived in Ukraine and thus the newest section of the web site, devoted to Eastern Europe, was born.

As of February 2008, there were 4,950 photos on the web site, breaking down as follows:

Visitors can find photos of specific interest by using the searchable photo database.

The vast majority of the photographs were taken by the author. A few were taken by friends / traveling companions. In rare instances, where access or photography was restricted, images from commercial postcards have been used to fill some gaps. Where the photo was taken by someone other than the author, the photographer's name (if known) is noted.

The web site also includes approximately 300 pages of text, written by the author, describing the places visited or, in the case of the Africa section, the people and wildlife depicted in the photos.
